| ROUTING DOLOMITENLAUF

 |
IT'S ALL ABOUT BEING THERE 40 years ago, when the 1st Dolomite Race (Dolomitenlauf) ski race began at the foot of the romantic Lienz Dolomites, the motto was ‘Everyone is a winner against themselves’. And nothing has changed today – each and every participant, wherever they come from in the world, is celebrated like a winner when they reach the finish line in Lienz main square in what has now become Austria’s biggest and most important cross-country race open to the public.
But the Dolomite Race is more than just a cross-country race – each year it is also celebrated like a festival with plenty of traditional and special flair. Over 2,000 participants from all over the world gather at the starting point each year. Many of them flock to Lienz/East Tyrol to acquire the highly sought after stamp for the Worldloppet or Euroloppet pass. But most cross-country skiers simply come to tackle the sporting challenge and become a ‘winner against themselves’, as the slogan goes. And of course plenty of world class skiers come to Lienz to collect valuable points for the FIS Marathon Cup. An attractive supporting programme distinguishes the Dolomite Race from other cross-country races. On Thursday, a warm welcome will be held in the form of the ‘Romantic Race’ race in Lavant. This involves a 3 km cross-country trail in idyllic Winter surroundings by torch-light. Whoever achieves the average time is declared the winner! Participants can also stock up for the event on mulled wine and delicious bacon and bread. The perfectly prepared trails and 3 new bridges on the Dolomite Race ensure pure skiing pleasure. The enthusiastic crowds waiting in the ‘Dolomite Race villages’ also add to the unforgettable atmosphere. Bands, plenty of applause and fantastic refreshments are on hand to fuel the enthusiasm of cross-country fans. It’s all about being there – so register at www.dolomitensport-lienz.com
Renaissance for classic skiers
For the last few years, a Classic Competition has also formed part of the Dolomite Race. In addition to the 42 km Dolomite Classic Race, which takes place to the south of the Lienz Dolimites in the cross-country metropolis of Obertilliach, there is also a ‘Long Distance Race’ which also counts towards the Worldloppet like the Dolomite Race and includes 60 km of free-style skiing. And for the less experienced athletes, a shorter distance of 20 km in a classic skiing style is also offered. This means that ‘die-hard’ fans of the classic skiing style can also take part in the ‘Dolomite Race Games’. Since Obertilliach is located at an altitude of 1,400 m above sea level on a high Alpine plateau, the first snows fall here in November. The guaranteed snow, over 150 km of cross-country trails and Nordic Sports centre make Obertilliach an Austrian paradise of cross-country sports. It is not without good reason that the king of the biathletes, Ole Einer Björndalen, has taken up residence in the small dreamy town of Obertilliach where he has been preparing for his great successes for many years. And what makes the ‘Dolomite Classic Race’ on Saturday 23 January 2010 even more attractive is the new 8 km long track section in the direction of Maria Luggau. This flat passage makes the classic cross-country race of 42 km easier to manage for the less experienced skiers.
Dolomite Sprint – the king of the sprint competitions
Only those who have experienced the Dolomite Spring before can truly understand what happens each year in the main arena in the main square of Lienz. Following the official opening of the ‘Dolomite Run Games’, which ends with the lighting of the Dolomite Run fire, it is traditional for world class sprinters to warm up for the hardest cross-country sprint in the world. It was 30 years ago in Lienz that the starting shot was fired for the world’s first cross-country sprint. This idea, born in Lienz, has now become an Olympic discipline as well as making a significant contribution towards fuelling enthusiasm for cross-country sports worldwide. But everything is done a bit differently in Lienz. Head of the organising committee, Franz Theurl, has been involved with the sprint race from the outset and has continued to develop the event so as to retain its attraction and sense of excitement across the decades. The imposing start ramp with its spot lights and the starting gate indicate to the thousands of spectators that something special is about to happen. The 7 metre high ramp with its downward starting curve fills the sprinters with excitement in advance. Not forgetting the jump which is taken at a full sprint pace and the hairpin bend right before the final sprint which has to be taken correctly to stand any chance of winning. So this is not just a race for the world’s strongest sprinters – it is also ideal for technical experts! The 6 sprinters who race their way through the heats and semi-final into the final will need to summon all their strength. The final again involves 3 laps of the sprint arena in Lienz’s main square, each covering 350 m. Several stands and floodlighting for the TV transmission enable the public to get a clear view. But the other finishing touches also add to the unique atmosphere – the starting shot being fired from an old canon and the rhythmical drums during the breaks.
Bambini-Marathon – filling kids with enthusiasm
A race for children was organised as part of the Dolomite Run for the first time last year. This was a successful premiere with over 200 participants. The competition was launched on a 4 km track in Obertilliach after the ‘Dolomite Classic Race’. A joint victory ceremony with the adults added to the excitement of the children. The ‘Bambini-Marathon’ will again be held in the Nordic Sports centre of Obertilliach during the 36th Dolomite Run. Information and registration at: www.dolomitensport-lienz.com
